100 objects
100 drawings
100 dresses
a temporary collection of 100 objects
Date
In 2010 we created our first community-museum for Dubai.
Goal
Our goal was to learn, how to present a public collection, about life in the city, as seen through the stories and objects of 100 participants
How
We generated submissions through an open-call that was widely promoted by radio, newspapers, e-shots, videocasts, other institutions.
Timeline
Our collection opened two months later, designed and curated and awarded a media sponsor.
Programme
For one week the project provided a space to learn about the lives of others, encounter new ideas, stories, precious objects and acknowledge shared histories. We offered school events, a university forum and a panel discussion on, 'The art of collecting' - including Dr. Rafia Gobash founder of the Women's Museum of the UAE, Ms. Manal Ataya Director General of the Sharjah Museums Department, Mr. Abdul-Raheem Sharif Founder of The Flying House.
Afterwards
The following week, after the exhibition closed, all the printed catalogues had been distributed and the last objects were returned to owners, we started to hear feedback from the public about how inspired and positive they had felt as either
participants or visitors.
Conclusion
Enabling a diverse community to participate in creative practice is complex but the results are positive and lead to people thinking alongside one another in new ways. Such projects can also potentially engage participation for future successful arts collaboration.
